Heerlen and the Parkstad municipalities want to become European Capital of Culture in 2033. Mayor Roel Wever officially announced the candidacy at the Professional College in Heerlen. The first round of the nomination procedure costs €800,000, and questions have been raised about the spending if the bid is unsuccessful.
