Héctor Bellerín’s activism and complaint over homophobic remarks

Héctor Bellerín, the 31-year-old Spanish right-back for Real Betis, was described as an outspoken advocate on social and environmental issues ahead of his team’s match against Feyenoord. He has criticized football’s insular culture, spoken about the climate crisis and consumerism, supported veganism and sustainable initiatives, and argued that footballers should use their public platform and be open about vulnerability and emotions. He has also written articles and fiction, studied creative writing, and pursued photography and literature alongside football.

The account said Bellerín was suing a Spanish vlogger over homophobic statements. It also said he remained committed to football while rejecting the macho culture he associates with parts of the sport and encouraging younger players to show their emotions.
