Jacky, an American resident of Amsterdam's Rivierenbuurt, organized a Halloween trick-or-treat event for more than 1,200 children. She had started the event six years earlier so that her own children could take part in a tradition from her youth.

Children seeking sweets and residents handing them out had to register, so participants knew which homes were taking part. Jacky said Halloween and Sint-Maarten could coexist, describing Sint-Maarten as cozy and Halloween as focused on spooky activities.
