Haarlemmerdijk businesses face at least eighteen months of roadworks

Businesses on Amsterdam’s Haarlemmerdijk are facing at least eighteen months of roadworks by Liander and Waternet to replace old water and gas pipelines. The work is divided into eleven phases, with the first phase starting at a cheese and bread shop. Several entrepreneurs fear lower customer numbers and turnover, while others say the utility work is necessary. They are not entitled to compensation because the work is considered necessary.
The Haarlemmerstraat is being fully closed this week. Bicycle traffic is being diverted via the Haarlemmer Houttuinen for cyclists coming from the west and the Brouwersgracht for cyclists coming from the city centre. Motorised traffic on the Brouwersgracht is travelling in the opposite direction to accommodate the diversion.
