National Ombudsman report on government policy for farmers

13 sources

National Ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen concluded that the government has been unreliable towards farmers for about ten years. Based on discussions with 32 farmers and consultations with organisations and experts, his report said changing rules, conflicting policies and unclear or delayed decisions on issues including nitrogen, manure, nature, water and animal welfare created prolonged uncertainty for farms and families. The report said the government lacked direction and transparency and listened too little to farmers; it also noted that sector lobbying can at times contribute to policy variability.
