Government launches campaign on speaking out against sexism

The Dutch government launched a follow-up campaign encouraging men to speak out against sexist remarks and jokes. Ipsos I&O research commissioned by the government found that almost eight in ten Dutch men dislike sexually inappropriate comments about women, and that a similar proportion respect men who address such behaviour. However, 58% said they sometimes make such comments or laugh along even when they do not like them, including 37% who said they laugh along.

The research found that men often overestimate how accepting other men are of sexist behaviour and may fear being seen as moralistic or spoiling the atmosphere. More than half said they were likely to intervene when another man crossed a line, while nine in ten said a good friend should be able to address such behaviour without damaging the friendship. Although 84% saw themselves as someone who would speak up when a remark went too far, the findings indicated that this does not always happen in practice.
