German World War II submarine found after a coordinate error

Divers from Plymouth reportedly found the German submarine U-672 about 32 kilometers off the coast of Devon, in the English Channel, at a depth of 70 meters. The submarine had been damaged by an attack from the British warship HMS Balfour in July 1944. Its captain, Ulf Lawaetz, ordered the 52 crew members to abandon it before it was sunk; all were later rescued and held as prisoners of war, with no deaths reported.
The wreck had remained unidentified because the attack coordinates had been recorded incorrectly, with two digits switched. Divers found it this summer at a location marked on maps as the wreck of a steamship that sank in 1917. The U-672 was launched in Hamburg in 1943 and had completed four patrols without sinking an Allied ship.
