Funding gap remains for restoration of Breda’s Hillen organ

The restoration of the centuries-old Hillen organ in the Great Church of Breda is continuing, but €300,000 of the €1.3 million needed has not yet been secured. The national government and the province have each contributed €300,000, while the church has raised €400,000 through funds and donations. The municipality of Breda rejected a request for financial support.

CDA group leader Antje Beers has submitted an amendment calling for the municipal contribution to be taken from the general reserve. Church director Marieke Wiegel said the restoration had already begun and that the lack of funding was causing difficulties. The work is intended to address deteriorated leather and other technical issues and to give the 3,780-pipe organ both traditional and digital playing capabilities.
