Former Australian bishop Christopher Saunders, 76, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for the sexual abuse of two Aboriginal men. He will be eligible for parole in February 2031. A jury found him guilty in August of one rape and 12 assaults, while acquitting him of abusing a third young man. The abuse took place between 2008 and 2019 in Saunders’s home, motels and a church holiday home in the Kimberley region. He was arrested in 2024. Saunders served as a priest from 1976 and was Bishop of Broome from 1996.
