Flevoland has not yet decided whether to take enforcement action against 29 agricultural businesses in Noordoostpolder and Lelystad over alleged activities harmful to nature and nearby Natura 2000 sites. The businesses include farms and growers of flowers, bulbs and trees. Action groups said they may use plant-protection products containing PFAS, extract soil and surface water from nature reserves, have constructed drainage and use nitrogen-emitting agricultural machinery.
The Flevoland Environment Service and Gooi en Vechtstreek is still gathering information after receiving enforcement requests from the action groups in May and asking the businesses for further details in September. The province said it is not yet clear which activities are involved or how many businesses would be affected, and that the businesses may continue operating during the investigation. If an infringement of nature legislation is established, the responsible entrepreneur will be informed and given the opportunity to respond or take measures to end it.
