A fire broke out in a plastic litter box at a home on the Zuidermeent in Kraggenburg on Saturday night. The residents had tried to put out the fire before firefighters arrived; by then it was extinguished and the residents were safely outside. Twelve cats and a dog were brought to safety and were unharmed. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The residents had inhaled smoke and were checked by paramedics as a precaution. No one needed to go to hospital. The smoke was heavy because the litter box was made of plastic.
