A fire destroyed a car in which homeless couple Carolina and Nico had been sleeping at a parking area on Goirkekanaaldijk in Tilburg. Nico woke shortly before 9:30 p.m. because of smoke, pulled Carolina from the vehicle and tried to extinguish the fire with water from a nearby canal, but the car could not be saved. Both escaped, while their belongings in the car were destroyed.

The couple believed the fire had been deliberately started, but police said they were not investigating it as arson. They are temporarily staying with friends on a boat.
