Fayçal Assaad said that financial hardship was a persistent concern in his family. After his parents divorced, his mother took a job to support the family, while his brother assumed a father-like role. Assaad said he had already understood how poverty could pass from one generation to the next and is now working as a researcher to help break that pattern.
