Protest at Microsoft data centre construction site in Sloterdijk

Illustration

Protesters gathered at the planned Microsoft data centre site on Plimsollweg in Amsterdam's Sloterdijk district to oppose its construction. Reports differed on the scale and extent of the action: some described about 100 people trying to enter the site, while another reported hundreds occupying it and activists climbing cranes. Footage cited in one report showed protesters breaking through the site fencing. Police were deployed, and one report said several people were arrested. One report also described pro-Palestinian slogans being chanted.

Before the protest, residents received a letter carrying Amsterdam municipality branding that warned of effects allegedly linked to the data centre. The municipality said it had not sent the letter and rejected its claim that 30,000 homes would not be built because of electricity shortages. Tegengas!, an organiser of the protest, denied being responsible for the letter.
