FAA modernization of air traffic control systems

Illustration

The US Federal Aviation Administration is replacing outdated air traffic-control systems, including floppy disks used for an information-exchange system, at more than 400 locations. The agency aims to complete the modernization by the end of 2028.

The work also includes radar systems, some more than 35 years old and partly operating on Windows 95. Congress has authorized $12 billion for the investment, while the official overseeing the agency is seeking a further $30 billion for additional FAA systems.
