Detention extended for suspect in Hajar killing

A court extended by 90 days the pretrial detention of 23-year-old Abdi A., who is suspected of killing 29-year-old Hajar from Amsterdam. Hajar disappeared after she was last seen cycling from the RAI area toward Buitenveldert on 4 October. Her body was found in a suitcase in the water at the Amsteldijk on 16 October; the investigation found that she was killed in an anti-squatting building in Buitenveldert.

A. was initially questioned as a witness after other witnesses reported seeing Hajar later with another man. Further investigation indicated those witnesses had either seen another woman or seen Hajar at a different time. Police seized A.'s phone and found material that led them to regard him as a suspect, though the material has not been disclosed. He is also suspected of attempted murder or manslaughter of a man and of threatening a woman in Koggenland, as well as of concealing Hajar's body, according to a single report. His restrictions have been lifted, and a pro forma hearing is due within the 90-day extension.

Her body was found in a suitcase in the Amstel near the Amsteldijk on 16 October. Police said she was killed shortly after she disappeared and now confirm that she was killed in an anti-squat former school building on De Klencke in Buitenveldert. The investigation at the building is continuing. Police arrested a 23-year-old man with Somali nationality and no fixed address in connection with her death. He had initially been treated as a witness after being seen with Hajar, but police said further investigation made him a suspect. He was arrested in Spierdijk after police responded to a violent incident at a house; a man was injured. The suspect is being held under restrictions, and police say the investigation into what happened and his possible role continues.

Investigation into the death of Hajar

7 sources

Police arrested a 23-year-old man in Spierdijk on suspicion of involvement in the death of Hajar, a 29-year-old woman from Amsterdam. Her body was found in a suitcase by the water on the Amsteldijk in Amsterdam's Rivierenbuurt. The suspect has a permanent residence permit and came to the Netherlands when he was six, according to one report. Mayor Femke Halsema expressed condolences to Hajar's relatives, who asked for privacy, and said the city will continue measures intended to improve women's safety. Halsema said she would not comment on whether police had taken Hajar's disappearance seriously enough, pending an investigation that she expects to be completed within weeks. She also called for restraint over speculation about the suspect's background while the police investigation continues. Women's organisations said Hajar's death had deeply affected women close to her and renewed attention to women's safety, while stressing that the circumstances of her death remain unclear.
