Evaluation of Amsterdam's Vondelpark fatbike ban

Amsterdam's municipality said its fatbike ban in the Vondelpark, introduced on 11 May, has sharply reduced the number of fatbikes and the nuisance associated with them. It issued 167 fines and 138 warnings up to 1 September; all 20 objections were rejected. Park users rated the measure positively, but their sense of safety did not improve, as they also cited other fast bicycles, crowding and the mix of park users.

The ban remains in force but will not be expanded to other locations for now. The municipality is awaiting national regulations and the outcome of further legal proceedings. Most fatbike riders who spoke with the municipality considered the ban unnecessary and said enforcement should target riding behaviour rather than a type of bicycle; some continued to ride through the park despite the ban.
