Estelle van Hengel, 27, experienced severe pain from her first menstruation. She said her complaints were for a long time dismissed as a normal part of menstruation and treated with painkillers, although she also had symptoms in the weeks around her period.

She was diagnosed with endometriosis in her mid-20s. She said the diagnosis brought relief because it explained her longstanding pain.
