The Dutch cabinet launched the National Institute of Defence Technology (NIDT) at the barracks in Stroe. The institute is intended to bring together companies, start-ups, universities and other knowledge institutions to accelerate the development, production and scaling-up of defence technology in the Netherlands. It is due to receive €350 million annually from 2028.

Its first assignment is to develop ways to protect the North Sea around the clock against sabotage of pipelines, submarine cables, wind farms and other offshore infrastructure. Companies and start-ups can apply for the assignment; one report also said universities and other knowledge institutions can take part. Reports described Russian spy ships and the shadow fleet as threats in the area.
