Erin Patterson’s life sentence without parole upheld

An appeals court in Victoria, Australia, upheld a decision that Erin Patterson, 52, will serve life imprisonment without parole for the murders of three relatives of her former husband by mushroom poisoning. Prosecutors had appealed her original sentences, which allowed parole after 33 years, and the court also rejected Patterson’s appeal against her convictions.

Patterson had maintained that the poisonous mushrooms served at a July 2023 family meal in Leongatha were added accidentally. The meal killed her former husband’s parents and aunt; his uncle survived after spending weeks in a coma. She can still seek to challenge the appeal court’s decision before Australia’s Supreme Court, her final possible avenue of appeal.
