An earthquake in central Japan injured at least 24 people, according to local media. Some people were hurt while trying to escape, including a woman in her nineties in Shizuoka who broke her shoulder after falling out of bed. One person in Osaka was taken to hospital after falling from the second floor of an apartment building.
The earthquake mainly affected areas near the prefectures of Aichi and Shizuoka and was felt as far as Osaka. Japan’s Meteorological Agency measured its magnitude at 5.7, while the U.S. agency reported 5.5. Aftershocks were recorded, and train services were disrupted, mainly on regional routes, with some high-speed services also affected. The Japanese Meteorological Agency had warned earlier in the week about the possibility of strong earthquakes and related hazards such as mudslides and falling rocks.
