Dutch parliament calls for research into limits on private sperm donation

The Dutch House of Representatives adopted a motion with broad support calling on Health Minister Sophie Hermans to examine whether and how the government could impose a legal limit on sperm donors who father large numbers of children through private donations. Only the SGP voted against the motion. Previous ministers had said that intervention in private donations was legally difficult or impossible, while Hermans had also warned that the private sphere was difficult to regulate.
The motion followed reports about a Dutch donor, Simon, who allegedly fathered almost 200 children through private donations and clinics. The House also supported a motion to establish a national support route for donor children and parents, including a permanent contact point and appropriate psychosocial guidance. MP Lisa Vliegenthart said legislation was needed rather than another investigation, while MP André Poortman called the research a first step.
