Parliamentary call to ban generative AI for primary school pupils

A majority in the Dutch House of Representatives supported a motion by Volt and CDA calling on the government to regulate a ban on primary school pupils using generative AI, including tools such as ChatGPT. The motion was submitted during the debate on the education budget and was backed by PRO, D66, the Party for the Animals, DENK, 50PLUS, SP, the Christian Union and JA21.

The parties argued that children should first learn to read, write, calculate and think critically without such tools. They said generative AI could hinder the development of critical thinking, creativity and imagination, while digital literacy and AI should be used only to support learning.
