Dustin Hoffman said he had disliked filming the 1967 movie The Graduate, which marked his breakthrough as an actor. He felt that director Mike Nichols was repeatedly angry with him and that he could do nothing right.

Hoffman said he worried Nichols believed he had made a mistake by casting him in the lead role.
