Dolores Huerta dies at 96

Dolores Huerta, the American labor leader and civil rights and feminist activist, was reported to have died of cancer on Wednesday at her home in Bakersfield, California. She was 96. Huerta helped found the National Farm Workers Association with César Chávez in 1962, later known as the United Farm Workers of America, and became a prominent negotiator for agricultural workers. She received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

Huerta was also associated with the Spanish slogan “Sí, se puede!” (“Yes, it is possible”), whose English version, “Yes, we can,” was used by Barack Obama in his 2008 campaign. Earlier this year, she disclosed that Chávez had sexually abused her in the 1960s. Huerta continued taking part in protests into her nineties and advocated for action on racism, poverty, and women’s and LGBTQ+ rights.
