Discovery of the fossil Alsuacaris dirkeysermansi in Maastricht

The National Museum of Antiquities and the Natural History Museum Maastricht reported the discovery of Alsuacaris dirkeysermansi, a 66-million-year-old, tiny crab-like fossil, in the former ENCI quarry in Maastricht. The animal lived shortly before the extinction of the dinosaurs in what is now South Limburg.

The fossil is the first known specimen in its family to have been preserved three-dimensionally, including its underside. A single report said it was found by Belgian collector Diederik Dirk Eysermans, after whom it was named, and that it can be viewed at the National Museum of Antiquities.
