Decline in bus stops across the Netherlands

More than 1,100 bus stops disappeared in the Netherlands between 2020 and 2026, a decline of nearly 3 percent, according to an analysis of stop data from the Cooperation of Decentralised Public Transport Authorities. More than half of the removed stops were in Groningen and Drenthe. Groningen lost 342 stops and Drenthe 281, with both provinces losing more than 13 percent of their stops; the largest losses cited were in the municipalities of Groningen, Oldambt, Midden-Drenthe and Noordenveld. The number of stops nevertheless increased in some provinces. Overijssel added 73 stops and Flevoland added 60, mainly in Almere, Dronten and Urk. Most municipalities in Utrecht province lost stops; Utrecht municipality lost 73, while Veenendaal added 27.
