Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt died on Wednesday in Gothenburg at the age of 99, according to his management and the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Born in the United States to Swedish parents, he had long-standing associations with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the San Francisco Symphony and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw Orchestra, which he conducted dozens of times between 1983 and 2023. He had also led orchestras in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany, including the Staatskapelle Dresden.

Blomstedt continued performing into old age. His final concert was in May, when he conducted the San Francisco Symphony in Mahler’s Ninth Symphony; one report said he used a wheelchair, the performance was briefly interrupted, and he was replaced for subsequent concerts. He then cancelled his remaining performances for the year. He is survived by four daughters and seven grandchildren.
