Data breach in Deurne municipality documents
◆2 sources
The municipality of Deurne mistakenly sent documents containing personal and privacy-sensitive information to Omroep Brabant and local political party Transparant Deurne in response to requests under the Open Government Act concerning the illegal construction of a horse training hall. The municipality had delayed handling the broadcaster’s request and was ordered by the court in Den Bosch to pay €2,800 in penalty payments.
The documents, sent on 2 November, comprised about 11 GB and 36,000 pages. After discovering the breach, the municipality contacted both recipients, who said they would handle the material carefully. Deurne reported the breach to the Dutch Data Protection Authority and is conducting an external investigation into its consequences and measures to prevent a recurrence. The municipality says the documents have not been made publicly available further and that the impact is limited.
