Dark Spaarne quay remains closed in part

A section of the Dark Spaarne in central Haarlem has been closed after the quay was found to be in worse condition than previously thought. The road between the Catharijne Bridge and the Bakenesserracht remains one-way, with barriers and concrete blocks placed along the waterfront. Parking and mooring are prohibited along the affected section, and a separate lane has been provided for cyclists.

Alderman Robbert Berkhout said comparable quays, including those at the Kampersingel, Gasthuissingel and Kinderhuisvest, are being investigated as a precaution. There is currently no reason to close other quays. Replacement of the Dark Spaarne quay had been planned for late 2028, but the municipality is considering bringing the work forward; no start date has been set.

Traffic restrictions introduced along the Dark Spaarne in Haarlem

1 source

A section of the Dark Spaarne in Haarlem, between the Catharijne Bridge and the Bakenessergracht, was closed in both directions for temporary works. Traffic is now restricted to one direction toward the city centre until the quay is restored. Parking along the water and mooring ships are prohibited, while parking garage De Appelaar remains accessible. Cyclists from the city centre have a separate lane, and pedestrians can use the route away from the waterfront. Alderman Robbert Berkhout said the quay was deteriorating faster than expected and that the restrictions were precautionary. The quay, built in 1930, was already scheduled for replacement by the end of 2028, but the work is being brought forward. The start date and duration of the temporary traffic arrangements have not yet been determined.
