Rijkswaterstaat planned to discharge potentially contaminated water from a dike at Perkpolder directly into the Westerschelde. The local coalition party Groot Hontenisse-Hulst questioned whether the discharge was acceptable.

D66 and the SP in the Provincial States later criticized the plan and raised the issue with the provincial executive. The plan remains under discussion.
