Cristiano Ronaldo announced in a social-media video that he had retired from Portugal’s national team, saying it was time to give back the number 7 shirt. The 41-year-old had made more than 200 appearances for Portugal; reports differed on the precise total, putting it at 233 or 234, while both gave him 146 goals.

Several reports said the decision followed a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus during the September-October international window. One report said Ronaldo will continue playing for Al Nassr.
