Court examines dispute over Vlaams Belang’s IKEA campaign

The Court of Justice of the European Union is examining a dispute between the Belgian radical right-wing party Vlaams Belang and furniture group IKEA over the party’s “Immigration Kan Eecht Anders” plan, which uses the acronym IKEA. The case concerns the balance between freedom of expression and the trademark proprietor’s property rights. It has been reported that Vlaams Belang believes IKEA should tolerate the use of its brand name.
