One hundred and thirty-three residents of Kenya’s coastal Lamu area were challenging in court the planned Dangote refinery, described as the largest refinery in East Africa. President William Ruto and Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote attended a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, but a judge allowed no irreversible work on the land before a hearing scheduled for 14 October. The refinery is planned for an area where the extremist group al-Shabaab is active.
