Convictions upheld over 2017 Leeuwarden supermarket ATM bombing

The Leeuwarden court rejected an alibi based on a Snapchat video and a note on a phone in the appeal case over the May 2017 bombing of an ATM at a Poiesz supermarket in Leeuwarden. It ruled that the date of a Snapchat video could be manipulated and therefore did not establish that the two defendants were elsewhere at the time of the explosion.

A 34-year-old man from Urk and a 29-year-old former Lemmer resident, now living in Leidschendam, were each sentenced to 16 months in prison. The sentences were reduced from the 30 months imposed in 2019 because of the unusually long duration of the case. They must also jointly compensate Rabobank and the supermarket for nearly €160,000 in damage.
