The Amsterdam court convicted a 37-year-old man of attempted aggravated assault on two spectators during a pro-Palestinian protest at the University of Amsterdam on 6 May 2024, after he struck them with a shelf. The court rejected his claim that he had acted in self-defence after other protesters entered a barricaded area with torches.
The reports differ on the sentence. One says he received no additional prison term or community service because he had already spent 36 days in custody; another says he was sentenced to one month in prison. He was ordered to pay the two victims €1,385 and €750 in compensation, or more than €2,000 in total.
