Conviction of pro-Palestinian protester for group insult and insulting police

A court convicted a pro-Palestinian protester over statements made at an April demonstration attended by about 70 activists. It found that his remarks about Israelis as “new Nazis” and that it was unfortunate something had not been “finished” constituted an objectively Holocaust-related, suggestive statement directed at Jews on the basis of race and/or religion. The remarks were made using a microphone and loudspeaker.
The protester was also convicted of insulting police officers at another demonstration, where he used derogatory terms for them over amplified sound. The court found that this undermined police authority and harmed the officers’ honour and reputation. It imposed a suspended 20-hour community-service sentence, to be carried out only if he is convicted again within two years, and no fine, taking account of the personal and professional impact he said the media attention had had on him.
