Concertgebouw Orchestra performed Beethoven’s Fifth beneath EINDER installation at ADE

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performed Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony beneath EINDER, a monumental installation by Amsterdam artist Boris Acket, at the Central Market Hall in Amsterdam West during ADE. The installation consisted of a floating cloth measuring 80 metres by 25 metres, moved by 400 fans and influenced by wind, gravity and lighting. Seventy musicians performed beneath it.

Violist Tjeerd Top said the orchestra was playing for a new audience and that the music suited the dynamic artwork. Acket controlled the cloth during the performance and was also due to present a musical composition of his own afterward. EINDER was scheduled to remain on view at the Central Market Hall until 1 November.

14 sources

The 30th Amsterdam Dance Event began in Amsterdam, bringing electronic-music performances, industry meetings, art projects and other activities to more than 300 venues across the city and surrounding area. The five-day event includes clubs, major festival sites, cultural institutions, cafés, shops, care homes and public transport; DJs performed on the ferry between Central Station and NDSM. Programmes also include ballet, dance, visual art and installations, while events for older residents and intergenerational audiences are being held at care locations. Reports give differing visitor estimates: some put attendance at more than 400,000, while another says the event has reached an annual limit of 600,000 visitors and a later report cites more than 650,000. They report about 1,300 events, 3,600 artists and more than 300 locations. The event, which began 30 years ago as a small industry networking conference at De Balie, is now described as a major international meeting point for dance-music professionals as well as a citywide cultural programme. Amsterdam and ADE have introduced additional safety measures intended to help visitors get home safely during the weekend.
