Competing interests in De Wieden

In the De Wieden nature reserve in Overijssel, nature managers, reed cutters and farmers face conflicting interests. Nitrogen deposition needs to be reduced, peatland kept wet and vulnerable nature given the chance to recover, while farmers want to continue operating and tourism businesses benefit from the lakes. The interests must be accommodated alongside one another, but not all objectives can be achieved at the same time.
