Coen K., 36, went on trial in Den Bosch over the death of his girlfriend, Jessica Brants, 38, at her home in Vlijmen on 17 July 2025. Prosecutors allege that he kicked her repeatedly in the head and face while she lay on the ground; the court heard that she was found unconscious and seriously injured after a neighbour reported hearing an argument, screams and a crying child. Brants later died. Her three-year-old daughter was present, and K. was arrested that night. The hearing also examined messages and witness accounts concerning the couple’s relationship. K. said he lost control and did not want her to die. His lawyer has said that alcohol combined with drugs including oxazepam and diazepam may have caused a temporary state of confusion. A psychologist and psychiatrist concluded that K. was not fully criminally responsible, according to an earlier report, and advised a conditional placement under a hospital order if he is convicted. The case is scheduled for two days.
