Claims of reduced Russian troll activity were disputed

Ukrainian drones reportedly struck several data centers belonging to Russian technology company Yandex. Afterward, President Volodymyr Zelensky said there was less hatred, division and provocation on social media, while a widely shared Cloudflare chart showed a sharp fall in traffic on Yandex networks. Some users interpreted this as evidence that Russian troll activity and related activity by pro-MAGA, Reform UK and AfD accounts had declined.

Cloudflare and researchers disputed that interpretation. Cloudflare said there was no evidence that the attacks had disrupted social-media manipulation or other malicious online activity, and an expert said the bots measured in the chart were mainly web crawlers rather than social-media bots. Researchers from dTeam reported no change in traffic from known Russian accounts and bot clusters, while pro-Kremlin influence networks were still active. Experts said social-media platforms, rather than attacks on data centers, were responsible for identifying and removing coordinated networks that violated their rules.
