Champions League recorded a record goal average

After 45 matches, the Champions League had produced 187 goals, an average of 4.16 per game, according to the report. That was higher than in the first two seasons of the league phase introduced in 2024/25, when the averages were 3.26 and 3.38. Only the European Cup seasons of 1955/56 and 1959/60 had higher averages, at 4.38 and 4.19 goals per match respectively.

The current format features 36 teams playing eight matches, with the top 24 advancing. Former footballer and NOS analyst Theo Janssen said the format gives clubs more freedom because several defeats do not immediately eliminate them. He also said large differences in quality between teams contribute to high-scoring matches, but expected the number of big wins to decline as the competition becomes more important after the winter break.
