Cape Town plans to capture and house more than 60 baboons from two troops in a fenced area on the Cape Peninsula. The municipality says the animals have increasingly entered residential areas in search of food, creating conflicts with residents, and that the enclosure is preferable to euthanasia. The site, about the size of seven football fields, has been fenced and fitted with wooden platforms, but the municipality is still awaiting the final permits for the operation.
The plan has prompted weekend protests, with opponents calling the facility a death camp and fearing it will lead to more baboons being confined. The municipality says the other baboons on the peninsula can remain free. The first captures are expected next week, pending the permits.
