A California couple, Guojun Xuan, 66, and Silvia Zhang, 39, were indicted in a case involving the alleged abuse of at least 15 children aged between two months and 13 years. Fourteen of the children were reportedly born through surrogacy. Prosecutors alleged that nannies beat and punched the children at the couple’s villa in Arcadia, about 20 kilometres from Los Angeles. The couple allegedly operated a surrogacy office from the villa, where the children were cared for by nannies and spent hours each day in three rooms described as learning centres. Thirty-two surveillance cameras were found there last year. According to the Justice Department, footage showed the nannies systematically beating and harshly punishing the children, while the couple monitored them. The couple were accused of recruiting surrogate mothers and arranging for the children to be abused.
