Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever was due to submit his government's resignation to King Filip after overnight budget talks failed to produce an agreement. The reports said he was scheduled to meet the king at 9.30am.
The government had been negotiating for weeks over the next year's budget. One report said King Filip had interrupted a holiday because of the situation; it also said new elections were imminent, while another report said elections would be held only if the king accepted the resignation and that he could also refuse it or keep it under consideration.
