Avian influenza was detected at a laying-hen farm in Lutjegast. About 45,000 laying hens were being culled to prevent the virus from spreading.

A transport ban for birds was imposed in the Kollum-Augustinusga area of eastern Friesland, across the provincial border from the affected farm.
