Independent Australian MP Helen Haines, 65, was seriously injured after a car struck her outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria, while she was loading her vehicle. She was reportedly trapped between two cars and was in critical condition. A bystander removed the driver from the vehicle and controlled it until police arrived.
Police were investigating the incident, including whether it was deliberate. Witnesses reportedly said the driver turned around after passing Haines and then drove into her. The 43-year-old driver, from Tarrawingee, was under investigation; police found a knife in his car, though it was unclear whether it was connected to the collision. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as an attack but said no motive had been established.
