A fire broke out in the attic of an apartment building on Columbusstraat in Amsterdam-West early Monday. Firefighters scaled up the response to a major fire, deployed a Cobra cutting extinguishing system and advised nearby residents to keep windows closed and avoid the smoke.

About 12 homes were evacuated as a precaution. Residents were temporarily sheltered in a nearby supermarket while firefighters continued to tackle the fire.
