Arrests after anti-gay violence at De Oeverlanden

Eleven boys were arrested in May after reports of anti-gay threats, insults and assaults at the De Oeverlanden cruising area in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Nine reports were made in March and April, and at least nine visitors were targeted by groups of young people, who allegedly shouted at, spat on, kicked and sometimes beat them. The municipality said the boys entered the area to intimidate visitors and acted in groups of three to eight.
Police, enforcement officers, street coaches and a night-surveillance team increased their presence after the incidents. The boys and their parents were spoken to, and the municipality said the area has become quieter since the arrests.
