Arrest of former Hungarian central bank governor György Matolcsy

György Matolcsy, the former governor of Hungary’s central bank, was arrested in an investigation into suspected embezzlement and financial fraud. The Hungarian prosecutor’s office said coordinated investigative actions had taken place at several locations in the country in connection with suspected misuse of central-bank funds.

Matolcsy’s lawyer said he is suspected of causing significant financial damage through economic fraud and of using a forged private document, and objected to his detention. Matolcsy led the National Bank of Hungary from 2013 until March 2025 and had been an ally of former prime minister Viktor Orbán.
